Therapy Comparison

Proton beamy therapy differs dramatically from its two predecessors: radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Proton beam therapy is now, troche and will be for some times to come, the leading treatment for cancer. Above all else it is more effective. It is also safer, medicine more precise, has little or no side effects, and has a much higher success rate. Here is a side-by-side comparison:

The following graphic best illustrates a common challenge in treating patients with traditional x-rays and shows a benefit of proton therapy. This 4-year-old girl with a medulloblastoma has a high risk for life threatening side effects, using traditional x-ray therapy. The combination of her chemotherapy and radiation will severely harm the normal tissue in her mouth, neck, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis. If she survives the x-ray treatment, then all of her irradiated normal tissue will have a significant chance of malfunction and developing a second new cancer, in later years. Fortunately, protons, due to their specificity, can be precisely controlled to not irradiate her mouth, neck, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis.
As a result, she will not require intensive hospital support. In addition, her risk of developing a second
new cancer is reduced by 90%.
